Time lapse book review

A visual account of the changes to our world. Benjamin Grant, the main author of this book describes his thoughts on the environment and the rapid transformation of the face of the earth. Grant has categorised these transformations into three categories, civilisation, utilisation, and reaction. The untamed usage and extraction of the earth’s resources is rapidly changing the image and environment of our planet and it follows this cycle. The needs and strain of our growing population requires more and more every day from the earth’s resources which we then develop and utilise as built forms. These buildings eventually become ruins or are demolished and at this point nature reclaims them, a reaction.

If anything, this books purpose is exactly the title, when flicking through or scanning the pages a time lapse of this world and its exponential change is seen.

At Atelier Regolith we aim to combat the utilisation and reaction phases of the cycle, ensuring we only build with what we take from site, considering the life cycle and environmental impacts of all our projects. When the building has finished its life the aim is that it can be reclaimed by the nature on the site.
