Conceptual Models in Wax and Concrete
These conceptual models represent racial inequality that came from research of the site area of the Meadows in Nottingham. In an area that has a higher than the national average number of people of colour, there is also a high level of accounts of police officers displaying discriminatory behaviour. Worse still, most of these accounts ended in no action taken against these racist police officers.
Models made from wax represent fluidity and freedom. In contrast, the concrete cuboid model represents oppression and a rigid social structure.
The final model combines these ideas. Wax was cast into concrete then melted away to show evidence that there is freedom in oppression, yet we should strive for freedom to overpower the oppression.
