Materials
At Atelier Regolith we focus on using vernacular materials. These materials come from the site making them more sustainable with a lower embodied energy.
Rammed Earth
1/4
Rammed Earth is a sustainable building method that takes earth from the site, compacts it and creates walls and other elements. It has a high thermal mass, low embodied energy and is more sustainable than materials such as concrete
Clay Bricks
1/4
Clay is found in the ground in many places in the UK. We use the clay from a site to create bricks for the design. The clay is dug up, ground, mixed with water then put into a kiln creating a solid brick.
Reclaimed Bricks
1/4
Cross-Laminated Timber
1/4
By using reclaimed bricks from the site or nearby, we are lessening waste by using parts of once built structures and paying homage to the history of the site. This also lessens the carbon footprint created by making and transporting new bricks from elsewhere.
Cross-Laminated Timber is made from gluing together layers of solid-sawn lumber. The wood layers are usually oriented perpendicular to adjacent layers and can be bended to create curvilinear forms. Using the trees from the site, this is a sustainable way to create elements of the design.
