Our site director Ben was busy working on site with a private client in the Northamptonshire countryside. The client wanted an outdoor patio area for the family to socialise and relax. The building on site was Grade II listed and built out of local sandstone. A key part of the design was to use stone from the same local quarry to identically tie in with the local vernacular, this stone had to be used in conjunction with locally milled sleepers to reduce the cost of the overall plan.
To start the process our team completed in depth site analysis, understanding the variable conditions throughout the seasons and times of day. This developed into the forms of the design. The design was sensitive to the trees, wind, sun and moon around the site. The aim was for the patio to fit sympathetically within the listed site and the materiality of the region whilst creating a calming and low maintenance outdoor seating area.
Using a local contractor as well as virtual meeting software we were able to keep the carbon footprint to a minimum. When working on site, manual labour and electric hand tools were used in preference to heavy machinery that uses fossil fuels.
The project was successful in its aims of sitting comfortably in its vernacular because of this the clients are happy with the new addition to their property.
