Following my recent blog regarding sustainability and locally sourced materials, I have had a lot of emails asking for more information about sustainability and how we could help. This week I have decided to focus on sustainable changes that can also be done by yourselves as well as us architects.

There are multiple actions that need to take place to reduce climate change, material waste and to help sustainability. It is said that we need to halve the global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050 reports the 2021 Un IPCC. However, the annual targets look as if they are going to be missed which is why we need to spare awareness of climate change and how to become sustainable. 2020 was the year with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions due to the pandemic since the second world war, however this is not enough. To minimize the damage and avoid reaching an irreversible stage, we need to limit the current global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. It is evident that we need transformational changes to fight back climate change.

In 2050, 85% of power of power will need to be produced from renewable sources, according to the UN. This will have a huge impact, transforming energy operators and distributors who will need greater visibility and control their distribution networks.

The only real problem is that majority of renewable/ sustainable energy can be steep on price. At Pacha Studios we ensure that all our projects are installed with south facing Solar Panels and that our sites are equipped with at least one wind turbine for a fraction of the price.

Transport makes up 30% of the carbon emissions worldwide. To counter this problem, vehicle companies have started to make their vehicles electric. This is good and very helpful for the environment, however, may be bad news for some of us (including myself). It is a sad time for those of us who are involved within the car scene as it is coming to the end of an era. To us cars are seen as much more than just transport. It’s a hobby, our enjoyment, our freedom. But with the expensive fuel prices and only increasing, as well as the road tax increasing loads on these amazing classics, it is making it hard for us to keep hold of them.

Therefore, I think it is very important to take immediate action against climate change and design sustainably so that we can reduce co2 emissions in other areas with hope that we are able to keep our pride and joys.

Unfortunately, that is all I have time for this week. Thanks for readings.
