Technology

Influences of technology on architecture and design:

From start to finish, technology affects the way that architects design buildings and even the way that clients experience the design process. Technology can improve building efficiency and durability, while making it easier for architects to more accurately render a building design

Architecture and technology have always intersected at a precarious crossroads. Architecture has always utilized research and development in technology to propel their work to new heights, presenting buildings and products that are not only more interesting but more responsible and useful.

Technology within architecture has advanced the way we work through digital drawing and rendering to construction documents and even buildings are becoming easier to do with better results from working with digital 3D models.

Everything we do in today’s age is affected by the breakthrough in technology. We use technology on a day-to-day basis and these things are vital in our everyday lives to make things easier.

Computers are becoming faster, stronger and more globally ubiquitous, today around 40% of people have access to a computer and the internet. With the advancements in technology, we have the opportunity to have better use of a massive scale design within the computers.

The three areas in architecture that need the use of technology:

  1. BIM

  2. VR

  3. 3D Printing

Within the architecture world, there are many things we are architects need technology for, for example:

  1. 3D Printing - to create concept models for designs, or small element that need to be analyses in person on a smaller scale

  2. Revit, Sketchup, Lumion - to design digital models that we are able to see the interior and exterior of the design as well as add materials and furniture

  3. Adobe - used for rendering our visuals and create presentation boards

  4. AutoCAD - to create digital plans, sections and elevations of our design and due to it being digitally it is easier to zoom in to specific areas within the design to get a better understanding of the structural components and technical details

  5. Excel - to keep our finances organised within the workplace

  6. Virtual reality - to be able to physically see a structure and make changes by looking through a technological device

With the greater availability of data and Internet, architects are able to access more data that helps them in designing unique and more efficient buildings.

Modern Architecture:

Modern architecture, or modernist architecture, was an architectural movement or architectural style based upon new and innovative technologies of construction, particularly the use of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete; the idea that form should follow function (functionalism); an embrace of minimalism; and a rejection of ornament.[1] It emerged in the first half of the 20th century and became dominant after World War II until the 1980s, when it was gradually replaced as the principal style for institutional and corporate buildings by postmodern architecture.
