CPD- Continued Professional Development

There is 35 Hours of training needed each year per architect, half of these hours consist of structured learning, either face to face or online. 20 hours of these needs to be spent on the 10 mandatory RIBA Topics as states below:

  1. Architecture for social purpose

  2. Health, safety and well being

  3. Business, clients and services

  4. Legal, regulatory and statutory compliance

  5. Procurement and Contracts

  6. Sustainable Architecture

  7. Inclusive Enrolments

  8. Places, Planning and Communities

  9. Building conservation and heritage

  10. Design, Construction and technology

Each topic needs 2 hours of learning.

What can I do to contribute to CPD?

Microlearning is a quick informed update of up to 30 minutes which is usually digital and self-directed.

General Awareness is usually free, for one hour however this doesn’t lead to expertise.

Detailed Knowledge is structed CPD of 2 hours to half a day duration.

Deep learning is a course based on a single subject which is between one to two days duration.

Advanced learning is a course with a duration of three days which can potentially lead to additional specialisation, certifications or qualifications.

You will need to acquire at least 100 learning points, reflecting your own assessment of what you got out of an activity, this will need to be recorded and kept track off all CPD activities using the online recording tool set up by the admin of the firm. The use of any activity that can be proven to widen your knowledge can be put towards CPD. Even though RIBA provide structured CPD courses, members are free to seek out their own methods of learning and knowledge attachments. There is a minimum time of 25 minutes that should be spent on the 10 RIBA CPD topics. Most members within the architectural firm will do microlearning of general awareness of the 10 RIBA topic through simple reading, knowledge transfers and similar small- scale activities. This CPD learning can be personal or professional awareness and needs. This can be done by reading to additional qualifications. 

CPD Hours - 20 hours from 10 RIBA Topics (2 hours per topic per year) + 15 other hours that should be relevant.

All learning should be tailored to be formal, informed and structures through different methods stated above.
